February is Career & Technical Education Month in Virginia and Lancaster High School is celebrating our senior CTE students. We have interviewed some our 12th grade students and had them share their experiences with CTE and what advice they would offer to younger students.
Albert Pollard “Ap”
Albert Pollard “Ap” is a senior at Lancaster High School. He is currently enrolled in the Carpentry program at the Northern Neck Technical Center. Ap was inspired to pursue this career by his grandfather who was an electrical engineer. Ap also wanted to work in a trade that was versatile and would offer many different career opportunities. Ap enjoys the process of building a project from start to finish and also likes to work with his hands.
Ap would tell younger students to pay attention in their classes because they will learn valuable content and skills they will need in the real-world. The classes he took at LHS were important in success in his current program. Ap shared how he uses mathematics daily in the Carpentry program. This includes how to accurately measure and also how to calculate fractions. He says that many basic skills are important such as addition and subtraction in relation to factions. Ap says accuracy and focus are key components to success.. He advised, “measure twice and cut once” and pay attention to every detail. Ap is currently putting the skills he has learned to work at a local cabinet shop.
After graduation, Ap will attend the Newport News Apprentice School and is interested in the Electrical program. By completing training through the Apprentice School after graduation, combined with his skills in carpentry, Ap will have many options for future high-paying careers.
Lancaster High School is proud of Ap and his accomplishments in CTE!
